Post-Surgical Rehabilitation

A successful surgery is only half the story — the rehab that follows is what restores your strength, movement and confidence. We guide you through every phase, in step with your surgeon.

Why rehab matters after surgery

Surgery repairs the structure; rehabilitation restores the function. Without guided therapy, joints stiffen, muscles weaken, and scar tissue can limit your range — undoing some of what the operation set out to fix.

Good post-surgical rehab is carefully staged: protect and calm early, then progressively rebuild strength and movement, and finally return you to work, exercise and daily life. We keep every step in line with your surgeon’s protocol.

What early recovery often looks like

In the weeks after surgery, it is normal to notice:

Stiffness

A joint that feels tight and does not want to move through its full range.

Weakness

Muscles around the area that have lost strength while you healed.

Swelling

Puffiness that comes and goes as you gradually do more.

Guarded movement

Hesitation or difficulty with everyday tasks and walking.

Scar tightness

Restriction and sensitivity around the surgical site.

Surgeries we help you recover from

We work alongside your surgeon after procedures such as:

  • ACL reconstruction and other ligament repairs
  • Rotator-cuff and shoulder surgery
  • Total knee and total hip replacement
  • Spine surgery, including discectomy and fusion
  • Hand, wrist and elbow surgery
  • Arthroscopic “clean-up” and cartilage procedures

What our post-surgical care includes

Depending on your procedure and stage, your plan may involve:

  • Protocol-based rehab matched to your surgeon’s timeline
  • Gentle manual therapy to restore range and ease scar tightness
  • Progressive strengthening as tissues heal
  • Swelling and pain management strategies
  • Gait, balance and return-to-work training
  • A clear plan for getting back to sport or hobbies

How we treat your recovery at ProKinetics

Every plan is phased and specific — you always know where you are in the recovery and what the next milestone is.

1

A full-hour, one-on-one evaluation

Your first visit is a proper assessment with a Doctor of Physical Therapy who watches how you move and pinpoints what is actually driving your recovery — not just where it hurts.

2

Hands-on treatment to calm symptoms

Skilled manual therapy — joint mobilization and soft-tissue work — eases pain and frees up movement so the area starts to feel like yours again.

3

Targeted exercise that rebuilds

We coach you through progressive, specific movement that restores the strength, mobility and control you lost, so you regain function safely.

4

A plan that makes relief last

You leave with a clear home program and practical guidance on posture, activity and daily habits, and we measure your progress and adjust as you improve.

Prehab: getting ready before surgery

If your surgery is still ahead of you, starting rehab beforehand — often called prehab — builds strength and range that make the recovery afterward noticeably smoother and faster. Ask us whether prehab makes sense for your procedure.

This page is general education, not medical advice. Always follow the specific instructions from your surgeon; contact them promptly for fever, spreading redness, or unusual pain or drainage at the surgical site.

Why patients choose ProKinetics

One therapist, one hour, every visit

You work one-on-one with the same licensed Doctor of Physical Therapy — never handed off to aides or shared across three tables at once.

Hands-on care, not a gym floor

Skilled manual therapy is central to how we treat, paired with movement that actually addresses what is driving your pain.

Common questions

When should I start rehab after surgery?
It depends on the procedure — some begin within days, others after a period of protected healing. Your surgeon sets the start point, and we build the plan from there.
Will you coordinate with my surgeon?
Yes. We follow your surgeon’s protocol and progress you within those guidelines, so your rehab and your surgical care stay aligned.
Do I need a referral for post-surgical PT?
Sometimes a surgeon provides one with a specific protocol. If you do not have one, contact us — New York allows direct access and we will help you sort out the details.
