Physical Therapy for Sports Injuries

From weekend runners to competitive athletes, we help you recover from injury the right way — not just back to pain-free, but back to performing without fear of a re-injury.

Understanding sports injuries

Sports injuries land on a spectrum — from an acute sprain or muscle tear to the slow-building overuse strain that finally forces you to stop. Both deserve more than rest and hope.

Real recovery means calming the injury, rebuilding strength and control, and then testing that the area can handle the demands of your sport before you go back to it. That last step is what prevents the frustrating cycle of re-injury.

Signs you should get checked

Do not train through these — they are worth an evaluation:

Pain during or after play

Sharp or lingering pain that shows up with your sport and does not settle.

Swelling or bruising

Visible swelling, warmth or bruising around a joint or muscle.

Instability

A joint that feels loose, wobbly or like it might give out.

Lost power or speed

Weakness or a drop in performance you cannot explain.

Recurring tweaks

The same niggle that keeps flaring every time you ramp up.

What tends to cause it

Most sports injuries come from one of a few familiar culprits:

  • Doing too much too soon, without enough recovery
  • Movement or technique flaws that overload one area
  • Skipping warm-up and mobility work
  • Contact, collisions or an awkward landing
  • Strength or flexibility imbalances between sides
  • Returning from a past injury before it was truly ready

Sports injuries we treat

We work with athletes of every level on:

  • Ankle sprains and muscle strains
  • Tendinitis and overuse injuries
  • ACL, meniscus and other knee injuries
  • Rotator-cuff and throwing-shoulder problems
  • Shin splints and running injuries
  • Return-to-sport testing and re-injury prevention

How we treat a sports injury at ProKinetics

We treat the injury and the athlete — building a plan around the demands of your sport and the goals of your season.

1

A full-hour, one-on-one evaluation

Your first visit is a proper assessment with a Doctor of Physical Therapy who watches how you move and pinpoints what is actually driving your sports injury — not just where it hurts.

2

Hands-on treatment to calm symptoms

Skilled manual therapy — joint mobilization and soft-tissue work — eases pain and frees up movement so the area starts to feel like yours again.

3

Targeted exercise that rebuilds

We coach you through progressive, specific movement that restores the strength, mobility and control that keep a sports injury from returning.

4

A plan that makes relief last

You leave with a clear home program and practical guidance on posture, activity and daily habits, and we measure your progress and adjust as you improve.

Rehab before and after sports surgery

For injuries like an ACL tear, what you do before and after surgery shapes the whole comeback. We prepare the joint beforehand and then guide you through each phase of return-to-sport rehab, following your surgeon’s timeline.

This page is general education, not a diagnosis. Inability to bear weight, a joint that looks out of place, or numbness after an injury should be evaluated urgently.

Why patients choose ProKinetics

One therapist, one hour, every visit

You work one-on-one with the same licensed Doctor of Physical Therapy — never handed off to aides or shared across three tables at once.

Hands-on care, not a gym floor

Skilled manual therapy is central to how we treat, paired with movement that actually addresses what is driving your pain.

Two NYC clinics

Most insurance, no referral needed

We accept most major plans and New York lets you start PT directly, so you can book an evaluation without a doctor’s note.

Common questions

When can I get back to my sport?
As soon as the area can safely handle the demands of it — which we test rather than guess. Rushing back is the fastest route to a re-injury, and we would rather get you there once, for good.
Do you work with amateur athletes too?
Absolutely. Most of the people we treat are weekend athletes, recreational runners and active people — not just competitors. The same principles apply.
Do I need a referral?
Usually not — New York allows direct access to physical therapy, so you can book an evaluation directly.
